applying for unemployment online   Once you have established a valid unemployment extension claim for benefits through the Washington State Employment Security.

On March 10, 2010, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to extend the emergency unemployment compensation (EUC) program through the end of 2010.  This law only extends the dates people can apply for and receive EUC benefits.  It does not add any weeks of benefits.

On March 17, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to extend the EUC program for an additional 30 days.  This bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.  This bill does not add any weeks of benefits.

Both the House and Senate must agree on which version of the bill to pass.  After passage, the President must sign it before it becomes law.

We will update this site as new information becomes available.

If you have questions, please call the EUC unit at 877-558-8509.

    Can your benefits be extended?

Washington currently has two different extensions available:

We must pay EUC before EB.

    Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)

We mail paper applications to potentially eligible claimants.

See here for more information on Congress extending EUC.

    Extended Benefits (EB)

The U.S. Department of Labor notified the state Employment Security Department that Washington qualifies for state extended benefits as a result of a rising unemployment rate. This state extended benefits program is different from the federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program approved by Congress in 2008.

Though this program took effect on February 15, 2009, eligible claimants will continue on EUC until those benefits run out. At that time they may be eligible for state extended benefits.

EB pays up to 20 weeks of benefits. The first payable week is the week of February 21-27, 2009.

We mail paper applications to potentially eligible claimants.
