    Additional 1099-G information

Every January  the state of Washington begins mailing Form 1099-G (Statement for Recipients of Unemployment Compensation Payments) to people paid unemployment insurance (UI) during the prior calendar year.

Through April 30 each year you can also get your prior year tax information by calling the Weekly Claims Line and choosing option #5, or by logging on to the Internet. If you were issued more than one 1099-G, you will hear a total amount that includes all 1099-Gs.

Address changes that occurred after December 31 are not reflected on the 1099-Gs. The post office will forward 1099-Gs, but only if you provide them with a forwarding address.

Note: If you had federal income tax withheld from your unemployment benefits, the IRS requires you to submit a copy of the 1099-G with your tax return.

    New for 2009 –
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) made the first $2400 of UI benefits paid in 2009 exempt from federal income tax. No change was made to the 1099-G because of this. You must make this adjustment when filing you 2009 income tax return.

If you file your tax return electronically, you will need to identify the agency which paid you the benefits:

    Employment Security Department
    State of Washington
    PO Box 9046
    Olympia, WA 98507-9046
    Federal I.D. 91-6001099

NOTE: Some commercial electronic filing programs may require an agency phone number. You can use the 800-318-6022 number.

To get 1099-G information, you can also use one of the following procedures:

    Employment Security Department
    UI Special Programs
    Attention: 1099-G Unit
    P.O. Box 9046
    Olympia, WA 98507-9046
    Fax: 360-586-5604
    E-mail: UI1099@esd.wa.gov
    Subject: 1099-G Unit

NOTE: You need a personal identification number (PIN) to access your 1099-G information. If you need assistance to establish or to reset your PIN, call the telecenter.

For tax filing information, please contact your local IRS office. You can also call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040. Prior to calling the IRS, it may be helpful if you have copies of your previous year’s tax records.

The amount on the 1099-G form does not include any overpayments or adjustments to claims. You need to resolve any differences with the IRS using receipts or other records to support your tax return. If you have questions about how to report the adjustments to IRS, call your local IRS office.

The IRS toll-free number for general tax questions is 800-829-1040. Other IRS toll-free numbers can be found in local telephone directories, or you can visit the IRS Web site.

    Q.

What is on my 1099 form – Statement for Recipients of Unemployment Compensation Payments?

    A.

The amount shown on the 1099-G form includes all benefits paid to you during the previous tax year. The total also includes benefits you may have paid back because of an overpayment. If you repaid benefits, you do not include the amount repaid in the total you report to the IRS on your tax return. However, you need to make this adjustment when you file your tax return.

In January, we mailed a copy to each person who was paid unemployment benefits during the previous calendar year.

If you had federal income tax withheld from your 2008 unemployment benefits, the IRS requires you to submit a copy of your 1099-G with your tax return
