Call 800-318-6022 to reopen your claim if it is four weeks or less since you filed your last claim.

Many of our readers complain about the difficulty of reopening an unemployment claim. It is surprisingly easy to freeze your benefits and miss a week of benefits. This can be very inconvenient, especially if you are low on savings and your unemployment compensation is your family’s only source of income.

Take for instance, Dianne Vorhees, she had this comment to make about the Washington Employment Security Department:

I don’t know how to start again and have been on hold for hours and days trying to get answers. Dianne Vorhees

Whether you make a mistake in your application or have to reapply altogether filing your a claim can be confusing if you don’t know what you are doing. This article will explain how you can reopen your claim. We won’t guarantee it will be easy. The truth is Washington’s Employment Security Department is currently overworked (now there is irony for you) and is swamped by the growing number of unemployment benefits applications.

How can you freeze your unemployment benefits?

If you stop filing your weekly claims (even if only for one week), you unemployment claim becomes inactive and you will not receive any more payments.

How can you reopen your claim?

There are two different routes to reopening your claim depending on how many weeks have gone by since you filed your last claim.

If more than four weeks have gone by since you last filed a claim you can reopen your claim online. Click here to access Washington State’s Unemployment Information and Weekly Claims Line Webpage. On this page you can reopen an existing claim, change your address and sign up for direct deposit payments. To reopen your claim you will have to supply your Social Security Number and provide personal information to process your application.

However, remember y0u can only apply online from Sunday 12:00 am to Friday 3:00 pm. If it is after 3 pm Friday you must reopen your claim over the phone.

If four weeks or less have gone by since you filed a claim you can reopen your claim over the phone. If you didn’t file your claim a week by mistake, this is the easiest way to straighten things up.

Call 800-318-6022 or 800-365-8969 from 8:00 am to 5 p.m from Monday to Friday. Select option 7 in the main menu to talk to a claims specialist and claim for the previous week. If you want to reopen your claim for the current week, select option 2
